2 arrested in Erie for alleged theft after crashing stolen car from Longmont

A man and woman are accused of stealing items from an open garage in Erie on Thursday morning, as well as a car from Longmont earlier this week.

Alan Clifton, 29, of Denver, and Makayla Weber, 18, of Windsor, were arrested on suspicion of second-degree burglary, identity theft, criminal trespassing and aggravated motor vehicle theft, as well as other charges of theft and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Erie police Cmdr. Mike Haefele.

Erie police responded to the area of Telleen Avenue and Jasper Drive at about 5 a.m. for a report of suspicious activity and a loud noise, Haefele said. Officers found Clifton and Weber walking away from a car they had crashed into a curb, which was later discovered to have been stolen out of Longmont on May 15.

During the investigation, police also learned that Clifton and Weber allegedly entered an open garage and stole a purse that contained credit cards and personal ID cards from the unlocked cars parked inside.

Haefele said the garage in the Erie Commons neighborhood appears to be the only victim in Erie, but “it‘s possible there may be other victims in Longmont.”

Police allegedly found other items in the stolen car and are identifying where they came from. They also found drug paraphernalia and a scale, according to Haefele.

Colorado court records show that Clifton has a number of previous felony charges and some drug-related convictions. Weber has one petty theft on her record. Haefele said it‘s not yet known how the two know each other.

Both were taken to Boulder County Jail and are not yet scheduled to appear in court.

Erie police are asking residents to keep garage doors closed and secure and car doors locked. They also recommend keeping valuables out of plain sight inside cars.
