B’luru man with rare blood saves pregnant woman

BENGALURU: City-based marketing executive , 50, was in Mysuru for a business meeting on June 15 when he was told a woman due for delivery needed B-ve blood immediately.
Within two hours he reached the hospital in Mandya and donated blood to Pooja S, 22, who was facing complications during delivery. A native of Magadi, she delivered a baby girl on Tuesday.

Pooja was admitted to Mandya government hospital on June 15. As she was B-ve, doctors had told the family to keep one unit of blood ready in case she requires during delivery.

“We were worried when doctors said we’ve to keep two units of B-ve blood ready. The hospital had one unit and we had to get one more. I got a call from Ganesh soon after the message was spread on WhatsApp groups. Luckily, he was in Mysuru for official work; on his way back to Bengaluru, he stopped at Mandya and donated blood,” said D Shanmugam, husband of Pooja.

Ganesh, who has donated blood 75 times so far, said the gesture gives him happiness. The trigger was when his mother suffering from blood cancer needed O-ve blood.

“She had undergone blood transfusion once in six weeks in 2017. Though I initially thought it would be tough to find O-ve donors, with the help of WhatsApp groups, we would get them within two hours. I too am doing my bit,” said Ganesh.
