City’s favourite music teacher passes away

Thiruvananthapuram: Carnatic musician and former principal of Sri Swathi Thirunal College of Music (57) passed away on Friday. He died a few days after a liver transplant surgery at a private hospital here.
A native of Alappuzha, Sreekumar relocated to the city in the 1980s to learn music at Swathi Thirunal College. After completing Ganabhooshanam and Ganapraveen courses, he joined the institute as a lecturer in 1989 and went on to become the college principal in 2015.

Sreekumar learned the basics of music from Alappuzha Haridas and Kaithavana Ravi. He was also a disciple of Mavelikkara Prabhakara Varma, Neyyattinkara Vasudevan and Palkulangara Ambika Devi.

Hundreds including musicians and his former students paid tribute when his mortal remains were brought to . Sreekumar was a much sought after in the city and his classes were regularly attended by hundreds. The classes were lively as the guru cracked jokes at every break of ‘charanam’.

Sreekumar’s former colleagues remember him as a friendly person who was dedicated to his work. He even went for recording at AIR a few days before he was hospitalised. “He had deep knowledge on the subject and was able to explain about the intrinsic elements of music with clarity,” said Lekshmi RI, a former student at Music College.

Suseela C J, who took over the charge from Sreekumar in 2017, remembered him as a dedicated teacher, while Harikrishnan R, former batchmate of Sreekumar and head of violin department, Music College said that the achievements of Sreekumar were the result of his struggle to learn music and he always wished to impart his knowledge to his students.

“Sreekumar had completed his responsibilities as an academician. He could have dedicated more time for music concerts and creative activities and even research. His demise is a big loss to the music aficionados,” said musician Ravikrishna, a batchmate of Sreekumar at Music College.

Sreekumar leaves behind wife Kamala Lekshmi, a veena artist and sons Harisankar and Ravishankar. Harisankar is a known playback singer. The cremation will be held at Santhikavadam at 10.30am on Saturday.

KTDC chairman M Vijayakumar and Soorya Krishnamoorthy were among those who paid tribute to Aleppy Sreekumar.
