Death toll in Assam floods increases to 24

GUWAHATI: With the recovery of three more bodies the death toll in has increased to 24. Though the overall situation showed improvement on Friday.
One body has been retrieved from of Karimganj and two from Sadar and Katigorah each in Cachar districts of .

Out of 24, the current first wave of flood that hit the state on June 12, claimed 21 lives due to drowning and three due to landslides.

While the affected districts have increased to five with Dhemaji in northern Assam coming under the grip of flood, the population reeling under the deluge has come down to 3.67 Lakh on Friday from Thursday’s 4.86 Lakh. Other districts hit by the flood are Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj and Hojai. Karimganj continued to be the worst hit with 1,62, 010 people still reeling under flood.

Brahmaputra and Barak rivers and their tributaries were also flowing below danger mark on Friday.

(ASDMA) officials said people sheltered in relief camps have also come down to 39,760 in the affected districts. On Thursday there were 55,983 in 200-odd relief camps.

As on Friday, only 1,898 hectare croplands are still under water.
