Green railway station grabs attention of passengers & commuters alike

LUDHIANA: A few weeks ago, an initiative was taken by the Ludhiana railway authorities, along with the Income Tax Department, to increase the greenery of the railway station, by growing plants in plastic bottles installed on the walls. Hundreds of plants have been put up in the huge vertical garden in platform 1 of the railway station.

All the walls of the platform are decorated with such green plastic bottles, in which different plants are growing. The beautiful saplings planted in green coloured bottles have become a centre of attraction for passengers and visitors, who are even clicking selfies in front of these walls. The greenery on the walls creates a pleasant environment all around.

Roshan Kumar, a passenger, said, “I travel from Ludhiana to Delhi three to four times a month. Last time, when I visited the railway station, it was completely different, and now the people are actually liking these installed plants. As the temperature is high, these plants somehow help to keep the surroundings cool, and they are so pleasing to look at. We really appreciate the authorities for having taken such a step.”

Parshuram, another passenger, said, “This vertical garden is a great initiative, and it has become a centre of attraction for commuters. A very beneficial thing that happened after installing these bottles is that the walls of the station are now clean, as no one dares spit on the plants. The authorities should install such plant bottles on other platforms as well. Also, there should be a united effort from both the public and the authorities to take care of these plants.”

Gourish, a student from , said: “I travel from Ludhiana to daily by train, as I’m a college student. Last month, these bottles had not yet been installed. In a few weeks only, I have seen a very pleasant change in the environment of this particular platform. The commuters actually smile when they see plants installed all over the walls. I really appreciate this step taken by the authorities. We residents should also plan something like this to increase the city’s greenery.”

Additional commissioner of income tax Rohit Mehra — who is the brainchild behind this project — said, “We have installed such bottles in different places of the city, like Panjab University Regional Centre, Income Tax Department office, and now Ludhiana Railway Station. Almost 70,000 people visit the station daily, and our actions in such public places cannot be missed, as they are always busy. Our goal is to make entire Punjab a clean and green state. We are planning to install such vertical gardens in other places of the city as well.”
