Karnataka CM assures Kerala CM of immediate restoration of Thalassery-Mysuru highway

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has written to chief minister that he has taken steps to expedite the restoration of Thalassery to Mysuru road that was severely damaged in the ongoing heavy rains.

After the road was severely damaged in the heavy rain, Karnataka government had issued orders banning traffic in the 141-km stretch that is the major connecting road for the passengers from northern districts of the state with Bengaluru. Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan had written to Kumaraswamy seeking immediate intervention for restoration of the road, the damage of which had seriously affected the busy inter-state road. The Perumbadi-Makkoottom stretch in the Thalassery-Mysore inter-state highway sustained heavy damages owing to heavy monsoon rains. Karnataka government should carry out the repair works in a war footing and lift the total travel ban along the stretch. The travel ban has been causing great difficulties to Keralities, the chief minister had said in his letter to Kumaraswamy.

In his reply, Kumaraswamy said that Karnataka government has sanctioned Rs 6.25 crore for the immediate restoration of the road. In addition, technical expertise is being sought for improving the road condition permanently, he said.

Principal secretary (public works) G Kamalavardhana Rao had visited Bengaluru on Thursday, and had held discussions with Karnataka chief secretary, Karnataka Public Works Department minister and chief minister H D Kumaraswamy in this regard. “The discussions were held up on the instruction of the chief minister and our PWD minister G Sudhakaran. The discussions have been fruitful. Karnataka has assured that immediate steps will be taken to restore the road,” Kamalavardhana Rao said. Also, a joint team of state PWD officials and Karnataka PWD officials have decided to inspect the road.

The road is used by travellers from , Wayanad and to Bengaluru, and several daily private bus services are operating to Bengaluru from various parts of the district.
