Liquor contractor’s henchmen kill suspected smuggler

PATIALA: A Patran contractor’s henchmen allegedly killed a 25-year-old man on suspicion of him being a liquor smuggler. The victim’s bloated body was found at Khanuri head of the Bhakhra main line canal on Punjab-Haryana border on Wednesday evening.

According to cops, Sukhwinder Singh of Shadipur Momian village in had been missing since June 14. They had initially registered a missing person’s case, but added Section 302 (murder) of the to the FIR after Sukhwinder’s body was found.

SHO Shutrana police station Darshan Singh said the deceased’s father had alleged that the henchmen of a local liquor contractor had attacked his son, inflicting grievous injuries on him, and then dumping the body in the Bhakra canal. He said the local liquor contractor’s men suspected his son of smuggling liquor from .

Police officials said that initial investigations revealed that Sukhwinder was returning home along with his younger brother Gurpal Singh on June 14, when they were intercepted by goons near Jhill village and thrashed mercilessly. While Gurpal managed to flee and reach home, there was no trace of his brother. The family had then lodged a complaint with the police.

The SHO said they were waiting for the report of post-mortem conducted by a board of doctors. The family members and relatives of the deceased also staged a protest demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
