Longmont father fires shot at person after hearing someone outside daughter‘s room

Longmont police are investigating an incident that involved a man firing a shot at an unknown person in his yard Sunday night.

A 49-year-old man who lives in the 2700 block of Denver Avenue told police he heard someone outside his 17-year-old daughter‘s room at 9:40 p.m., according to Longmont police Cmdr. Joel Post.

Unsure of who it was, the man armed himself with a handgun and went outside to confront the person in the yard.

The man thought he saw the person — who he did not recognize — holding something in his hand, so he fired a round from his handgun, Post said. The suspect fled the yard by climbing over a fence.

Police were not able to determine where the bullet went, Post said, though he added that there was no report or information that led them to believe the suspect was injured or any property was damaged by the shot.

According to Post, the man described the person in the yard as between 20 and 30 years old and about 6-feet 1-inch tall with a medium build.

The case is still under investigation. Police are not yet identifying the people involved.
