Longmont man dies after motorcycle, van collide on 17th Avenue

A 28-year-old Longmont man driving a sport motorcycle died Sunday afternoon after a crash with a van on 17th Avenue, according to Longmont police.

The man, whose name wasn‘t released pending notification of relatives, was riding his motorcycle eastbound on 17th Avenue approaching Gay Street when he laid his motorcycle down on the ground and was hit by a full-size van, Longmont police Sgt. Eric Lewis said.

Lewis said witnesses to the crash reported that the motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The motorcycle rider was taken to Longmont United Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the van wasn‘t injured and cooperated with police, Lewis said. The driver‘s name wasn‘t released.

Lewis said the crash remains under investigation, with speed a possible factor.

Police closed 17th Avenue and Gay Street for several hours Sunday afternoon while officers investigated.

The Boulder County Coroner‘s Office will release the man‘s name and cause of death, Lewis said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash and wasn‘t ed by Longmont police is asked to call and ask for the traffic unit.
