Longtime Democratic official to lead California watchdog

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – California has selected a former high-ranking Democratic Party official to lead the state’s campaign finance watchdog agency.

was named chair Friday of the California Fair Political Practices Commission. She will make $152,000 a year.

’s appointment comes amid internal turmoil at the agency that polices campaign finance and lobbying violations. The former chairwoman and a second commissioner recently resigned to take new jobs.

The 75-year-old is a longtime political ally of ’s who helped lead his 1978 gubernatorial campaign and 1980 presidential bid.

She was most recently secretary of the Democratic National Committee from 2002 to 2013.

’s legal affairs secretary has objected to efforts by the other part-time commissioners to reduce the chair’s authority.
