Philosophy student held for petrol pump double murder

PATIALA: A philosophy student has been arrested by the Patiala police for masterminding the robbery at a petrol pump on the Chandigarh-Patiala highway that led to the murder of two people. The first-year master’s student of Punjabi University has been arrested along with a known criminal.

Cops have arrested student Sikander Singh of Dhadrian village in Sangrur, with his accomplice Harpreet Singh of Saifdipur village in Patiala, who is a school dropout. Their third accomplice, Lakhandeep Singh of Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur, who is a proclaimed offender, is absconding.

The three assailants had shot and killed the two men in a bid to loot a petrol pump employee at Chamar Heri village June 16 and fled with just Rs 11,000.

According to cops, all three are addicted to smack and and committed the crime to buy more drugs. Lakhandeep had been putting up at Sikander’s paying guest accommodation for the past week. Sikander and Harpreet told interrogators that at the time of committing the crime, they were high on drugs.

Inspector general of police A S Rai said Sikander shot driver Kuldeep Singh, who had tried to thwart the robbery. The second victim, Davinder Singh, who was at an adjoining dhaba, had rushed to catch the robbers and was shot dead by Lakhandeep. Lakhandeep had later left the .32 bore pistol with Sikander and disappeared.

The three men had a planned to loot the employee and flee with the cash while flashing their guns, but their plan fell through when the two other men intervened.

Rai said that to creak the case, they had circulated a CCTV grab of Lakhandeep on a WhatsApp group of the state police. One of the senior officials from Dera Baba Nanak identified him and alerted the investigators. They then corroborated the information and managed to zero in on Harpreet, who had been seen with Lakhandeep.

Harpreet was immediately arrested and he revealed that Sikander, who was already facing charges of robbery and possessing illegal arms in three different cases, had masterminded the robbery. The cops picked up Sikander and recovered the weapons and motorcycle used in the crime.

Rai said Harpreet had multiple cases registered against him while Sikander had three cases and Lakhandeep was wanted in several cases registered at various police stations across the state. He said the cops also received information that Lakhandeep was associated with one of the infamous gangs, but the facts were still being verified.

The cops recovered two weapons, including a .315 pistol and a .32 pistol along with a Bullet motorcycle that Sikander owned. Officers have also seized 300 gm narcotics which were bought with the money looted from the petrol pump.
