TUI travel agent scarred for life in acid attack after spurned lover hired hitman

MONSTER: Claudio Gouveia ordered an acid attack on Ellie Chessell

Travel rep Ellie Chessell, 29, was scarred for life when a hitman hired by bitter ex-partner Claudio Gouveia threw acid on her. Gouveia, 35, was convicted of attempted murder and an earlier assault on Ellie.

Her alleged attacker, Edmundo Helder Rodrigues Fonseca, is being tried separately following the incident in Alvor, Portugal, in May last year.

Gouveia, 35, lured the TUI worker to the scene of the attack by posing as a wealthy businessman on dating app Tinder.

The Portuguese and Fonseca had earlier scouted out an area for the attack close to the hotel where Ellie worked, the court in Portimao heard.

Ellie, from Newport, Isle of Wight, had been living in fear of Gouveia since they split up. Before the attack he texted: “I’m going to find you and I will take your head off.”

She had gone to police to report the threats and even fled the island of Madeira where evil Gouveia lived, but he followed her to the Algarve.

Prosecutor Carla Neto said: “He plotted a cruel plan that any ordinary person would find repulsive.” Brave Ellie was not in court but identifi ed 43-year-old Fonseca as her attacker at an earlier hearing.

Gouveia, who denied all charges, was arrested shortly after the attack. Fonseca was later seized in Uganda and extradited back to Portugal.
