Woman killed for refusing to give alms

Rajkot: Two sadhus killed a woman when she refused to give them alms in Panchawada village of Jasdan taluka in Rajkot district on Friday morning.
Police identified the deceased as Jaishree Savalia (36), while the identities of the sadhus are yet to be ascertained.

“The duo came on the doorstep of Savalia and asked her to give them money. Savalia told them that she could give them flour but not money. Incensed at this, one of the sadhus hit her hard on the head with an iron club. Then both of them fled on a motorcycle,” said Atkot police station sub-inspector A V Jadeja.

Savalia’s teenaged daughters who had witnessed the incident informed the police. “According to Savalia’s daughters, the sadhus first demanded Rs 101 then reduced the amount to Rs 51. However, Savalia remained adamant and refused to give them money. When she asked them to leave, one of the sadhus attacked her,” Jadeja added.

Savalia was rushed to Rajkot Civil Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Meanwhile, five teams consisting of officials from Atkot police station, Jasdan police station and Rajkot rural local crime branch and Rajkot special operation group have been formed to nab the culprits. The cops are checking all the sadhus in the region to track down the accused.
